One Idea Group Session from Core Coaching: Coaching for Great Performance at Work by Sheridan Maguire

INTRODUCTION

This resource will help you facilitate a short group session to learn from the One Idea Summary on STAMINAS – Qualities for Effective Coaching.

SESSION OBJECTIVES

  • Be able to describe the eight STAMINAS qualities.
  • Be able to describe how STAMINAS can make coaching more effective.

PREPARATION

Send a copy of the One Idea Summary on STAMINAS to the participants at least one week before the session. Tell them to read it before coming.

THE SESSION

Introduce the session

Introduce the session by sharing the learning objectives with them.

Review STAMINAS

Put them into small groups and give each group flipchart paper and pens.

Tell each group to review what they read about STAMINAS and summarise their understanding on flip-chart paper. The summary should describe each STAMINAS quality. Give them 10-minutes.

After 10-minutes stop them and allow each group to present their summaries. When they finish, move on to discuss how STAMINAS qualities can help us coach more effectively.

STAMINAS and effective coaching

Tell them that:

Having reviewed STAMINAS, let’s look at how it can lead to effective coaching. Divide them into pairs, give each pair some flipchart paper and pens and ask them to discuss and complete the following activity in 10-minutes.

Billy, a manager who is very interested in coaching has just come across STAMINAS. He wants to know how the qualities can help him coach better. Discuss and write down how you think each quality will make him more effective at coaching.

Make sure they write their answers on flipchart paper.

After 10-minutes stop them and ask for each pair’s feedback. Listen to feedback from every pair.

When they finish presenting their feedback, thank them and share this information with them by reading it out. Tell them these are Billy’s thoughts about applying STAMINAS to his coaching practice:

Billy decides to learn a framework that can help to structure his coaching sessions. He learns about GROW (Goals, Reality, Options, Way Forward) which is simple enough for him to understand and use (Structure).

He also thinks about previous one-to-one meetings he’s had with individuals when he could have asked more challenging questions. For example, when a team member said she doesn’t feel confident doing something, next time he will ask a question to challenge that perception (Toughness).

He realises that it is important for him to take the time to listen more attentively and be more empathetic so he can understand things from the other person’s point of view before responding. This will require him to probe further using open questions (Affinity).

Now he realises that coaching is about listening more but there will be times he needs to tell. For example, letting a team member know that even though they don’t feel confident doing a task, from his own observation of their performance he believes they are competent enough to do it and making sure he tells them that (Mobility).

Billy realises there will be times during coaching when how he is feeling does not match up with the information coming out from the conversation. He should not ignore those feelings; he should explore them (Intuition).

When coaching he will focus on performance. He will not get into counselling people around their personal issues. That is crossing boundaries into what he should not be doing (Norms).

Billy has decided that every coaching session should result in something that must be done. Maybe an objective to be achieved or an action-plan to be worked on (Action-oriented).

He has decided to spend more time being available to support team members to achieve their objectives and overcome challenges by meeting with them and listening as and when necessary (Support).

After reading that, move on to review and conclude the session.

REVIEW AND CONCLUDE

To review and conclude the session, tell them that:

Thank you very much for all your participation. During this session, we reviewed the STAMINAS framework and discussed how STAMINAS can help to make coaching more effective.

Look for opportunities in your day-to-day work or personal life to apply various components of STAMINAS because it is only by consciously practicing that you will become fluent at using it.

End the session
