One Idea Group Session From Leading People By Lloyd Baird

This resource will help you facilitate a short group session to learn from the One Idea Summary on Six Ways To Care For Yourself As A Manager.

  • Be able to describe six ways you can care for yourself.
  • Develop an action plan showing three things you will start doing to care for yourself.

Send a copy of the One Idea Summary on Six Ways To Care For Yourself As A Manager to the participants at least one week before the session. Tell them to read it before coming.

Introduce the session

Introduce the session by sharing the learning objectives with them.

Review the six ways

Put them into small groups and give each group flipchart paper and pens.

Tell each group to review what they read about the six ways managers can care for themselves. They should summarise their understanding on flip-chart paper. The summary should describe each of the six ways. Give them 10-minutes.

After 10-minutes stop them and allow each group to present their summaries. After they’ve presented their summaries, let them know that next they are going to do an activity that will require them to think about actions they will start taking to care for themselves.

Action plan for your own care

Write down this information on flipchart paper for them to see:

Think about the six ways to care for yourself as a manager that you’ve just reviewed and write down three actions you can start taking immediately to care for yourself. These should be actions that are reasonable for you to do considering the time and resources you have.

Before they start the exercise tell them that:

To give you an example here are three actions I can take to care for myself:

  • Take a 15-minute walk every day during my break to reflect on my work and life.
  • Get a skipping rope and do 100 skips each morning.
  • Register on one of the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platforms such as FutureLearn or Edx and spend 10-minutes learning on it daily

These are actions which take about 30-minutes of my day. They are not difficult to do neither are they resource intensive.

Now give them 10-minutes for the activity. Let them know that each of them will give feedback on the three actions they write down.

After 10-minutes, stop them and get everyone’s attention. Ask everyone for their three actions and take the time to listen to all of them.

After they finish telling you their actions, thank them for doing the activity and giving the feedback. Next move on to review and conclude the session.

To review and conclude the session, tell them that:

Thank you very much for all your participation. During this session, we reviewed the six actions managers can take to care for themselves. Then you had the opportunity to identify three actions that you can start taking now to care for yourself. It’s easy to write down the actions and not take them but I challenge you not to forget about the actions you wrote. Start working on them right away.
